What age to start?

Some people believe that a child should be enrolled in dance classes as soon as possible, sometimes as early as the second birthday. Toddlers and preschoolers usually begin with "creative movement" classes instead of structured dance classes. If your child is 4 or 5 years old, consider his or her emotional maturity and personality. If they are extremely shy, forcing your child into an uncomfortable position may discourage them from dancing altogether. You will know if the classes you sign them up for is right for them. However, if your child is ready, an early start will give a tremendous boost.

If your child loves to dance, show off and be center of attention, then get them started as soon as possible. For girls, the outfit and shoes add more excitement to her joining the class.

What Can Dance Do for Your Child?
1. Develop discipline and have goals to work towards.
2. Improve their posture, balance and coordination.
3. Gain confidence and become more social.

Dance strengthens and tones the body, increases flexibility, improves circulation and helps to develop muscles. It also improves posture, balance and coordination. Dance can also teach poise. Children learn to communicate through dance, and express thoughts, beauty, and feelings through movement. Children often gain self-confidence and self-esteem from dance, as well as increased concentration abilities that may help them in their school work. Dance teaches children how to cooperate and support each other's efforts; encourages them to work in harmony with others; helps establish a child's spatial relationships; and promotes discipline and responsibility. Early training, focusing on repetition of simple motion such as exercises at the barre and basic jumps, establishes pathways for advanced movements not only in ballet, but in jazz and hip hop as well.

Choose a Dance Style:
Which dance classes is your child interested in? Many young girls have dreams of becoming a famous ballerina, so you might want to start with ballet. Boys generally like hip-hop or latin dance. There are mixed classes for younger dancers. You might want your child to try a couple of different classes before deciding. You may be surprised to see your little one's delight for ballet slippers or passion for front rolls and headstands.

Probably one of the most exciting things about starting dance lessons is shopping for leotards, tights and shoes. If you are unsure about what your child is expected to wear to class, ask us. Some classes require certain uniforms. Try to involve your child as much as possible when shopping, allowing him or her to choose a favorite style or color. Make sure your child actually tries on the leotards, as dance clothes generally run smaller than regular clothes.

Dancing is a joy, but it is also hard work. When your child is young, dance classes should be viewed as a fun experience, not as a chore. Watch your child during a class to make sure he or she is smiling and having fun.

In the Latin & Ballroom classes, kids and young adults will be focused on technique and presentation. They will progress through the Bronze, Silver, Gold and Open syllabus levels.

The highlight of the year will be the annual dance recital. A recital at the end of the dance year (right before summer) allows your child to show off their moves and to gain a little stage experience. Dance recitals are known to be stressful for parents (but create great memories), and a fantastic experience for kids.
